Alpine Beer Company, located in Alpine proper—about 30 miles east of downtown San Diego—has been brewing since 1999 and takes its beer seriously without taking itself too seriously. The spacious 180-seat pub is genuinely set up for dogs, with a dog-friendly patio that gives you real room to spread out. There’s an indoor bar and an outdoor bar, so you can choose your vibe depending on the weather and how social you’re feeling.
When we visited on a Saturday afternoon, the outdoor bar was packed with people and their dogs mingling freely. The setup actually works well because there’s enough space that it doesn’t feel crowded even when it is. You can grab a seat at a picnic table, order from their rotating selection of craft beers—they’ve got standards plus seasonal offerings—and just let your dog chill beside you. The patio gets good Southern California sun, so it’s genuinely pleasant on most days.
The brewery itself is unpretentious. You’re not paying for some Instagram-worthy experience; you’re getting solid beer and a place where dogs are genuinely welcome, not just tolerated. We saw everything from small dogs in carriers on the picnic tables to larger dogs stretched out under tables without issue. The staff didn’t fuss over our dog or make a big production out of it, which honestly made it feel more comfortable.
It’s worth knowing that Alpine is in the foothills east of the city, so you’re not stumbling here from other San Diego attractions. This is a destination stop if you’re already out that way or heading to nearby hiking spots. Bring water for your dog since it can get warm, especially in summer months when the patio gets direct afternoon sun.
