Blackwood Canyon

West Side of Hwy. 89, Three miles south of Tahoe City, Tahoe City, California

(530) 543-2600

Blackwood Canyon sits on the west side of Highway 89, about three miles south of Tahoe City in Placer County. This state-managed sno-park is one of those places where you can actually do something meaningful with your dog instead of just walking around a parking lot.

Winter is when this place really comes alive. The SNO-Park program clears parking lots and maintains facilities specifically for winter recreation, which means you’ve got reliable access even when snow is heavy. You can cross-country ski while your dog runs alongside, try dog sledding if that’s your thing, or just let them loose in the snow for the kind of play that wears them out completely. The landscape transforms into something genuinely beautiful—tall trees, open meadows, views that remind you why people fight over property in this area.

The canyon itself offers hiking opportunities when the snow melts, with trails that wind through the Sierra Nevada. Your dog will appreciate the shade from the forest canopy and the creek sounds echoing through the canyon. Summer visits are quieter than winter, which some people prefer.

A couple of practical things: SNO-Parks operate seasonally from November 1st through May 30th, so this isn’t a year-round destination. Dogs need to stay leashed and under control—bring a sturdy leash because snow and excitement can make even well-behaved dogs forget their manners. Snow conditions change constantly at this elevation, so checking before you drive up saves frustration. If you’re going in winter, make sure your dog has experience in snow or at least won’t panic when it’s deeper than they’re tall.

The parking areas are plowed and have sanitation facilities, which makes the logistics of spending a full day here actually manageable. Pack water even in winter—dogs get thirsty with all that activity, and eating snow isn’t a great substitute. Arrive early on weekends if you want a spot without circling the lot for twenty minutes.
