The Hite Cove Trail, a 3.5-mile one-way hike along the South Fork of the Merced River, delivers something special in early spring when nearly 60 varieties of wildflowers blanket the hillsides. Located in El Portal near Yosemite in Mariposa County, this trail is considered one of the best easy wildflower walks in the Sierra region, and dogs on leash are welcome the entire way.
The trailhead sits right at Savage’s Trading Post on Highway 140, which makes it convenient to access. The terrain is gentle enough that dogs of varying fitness levels can handle it without trouble, though you’ll want to assess your own dog’s comfort as you go. The path itself winds alongside the river with steady views of the water and the surrounding landscape. In those peak spring months, the hillsides turn into a riot of color, and you’ll see lupine, Indian paintbrush, mariposa lilies, and other blooms that photographers and nature lovers line up to capture.
Bring plenty of water for both you and your dog. The trail doesn’t offer much shade in places, so a morning start works well to avoid the heat later in the day. There are scenic spots along the way where you can stop and let your dog rest if needed. The river itself is a tempting place for dogs to cool off, though the current can be strong depending on snowmelt and recent rainfall, so use your judgment about letting your dog wade in.
The wildflower display peaks from March through May, though some blooms appear earlier or later depending on that year’s weather. Conditions can change seasonally, so checking current trail status before you head out makes sense. The hike is straightforward to follow, and the combination of easy terrain, flowing water, and springtime color makes it feel less like a workout and more like a pleasant walk through a particularly beautiful stretch of Gold Country.
