The West Griffith Observatory Trail in Los Angeles offers a straightforward 2-mile hike with 580 feet of elevation gain—doable in about 45 minutes if you’re moving at a decent pace. Starting from the Fern Dell picnic area, the trail climbs steadily through Griffith Park toward the Observatory with views that open up as you gain elevation. Dogs need to be leashed, which most people aren’t thrilled about, but it keeps things manageable on a trail this popular with joggers and tourists.
The difficulty sits right in that moderate zone where it’s not a casual stroll but not exhausting either. Your dog will get a real workout without being wiped out for the rest of the day. The Fern Dell entrance has parking and actually feels less crowded than other Griffith Park access points, which matters when you’re managing a dog around other hikers. There’s also Trails Cafe nearby if you want coffee or a snack before or after.
The Observatory itself sits at the top, so you’re hiking toward a specific destination rather than just wandering a loop. On clear days the views across LA and toward downtown are substantial enough to make the climb feel worthwhile. Even on hazy days, you get a sense of being up and away from street level, which changes how the park feels compared to the flatter sections lower down.
The leash requirement means you can’t let your dog roam, but the trail itself is wide enough that passing other hikers isn’t usually a squeeze. Spring is nicer here than summer—it gets hot on the exposed sections. Bring water for both you and your dog, especially if you’re going on a warm day. The Observatory has its own parking area at the top if you want to skip the hike and just visit, but hiking up gives you a different angle on the whole park.
