Wildcat Canyon Regional Park encompasses 2,430 acres along the Wildcat Creek watershed and the surrounding hills and ridges, making it a true gem for dog owners who appreciate nature’s beauty. Part of the dog-friendly East Bay Regional Park District, this expansive park stretches from the scenic Tilden Nature Area in the south to the historic Alvarado Park at the north end in Richmond. Its proximity to the bustling cities of the East Bay makes Wildcat Canyon a convenient and popular destination for hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and anyone seeking a peaceful spot to enjoy the great outdoors with their furry companions.

The park features a significant portion of the paved Nimitz Way, which begins at Inspiration Point in Tilden Park. This pathway offers stunning views and is easily accessible for those with dogs. While dogs are not permitted in the Tilden Nature Area, they must remain on a leash at all times on the Nimitz Way, in all parking and staging areas, and in developed areas of the park. However, for those looking to let their dogs roam a bit more freely, there are designated open space areas where dogs may be off-leash, provided they remain under voice control. This balance allows for a more relaxed experience while ensuring the safety and comfort of all park visitors.

If you’re planning to visit with a larger group of dogs, be sure to obtain a dog-walking permit from the Park District, as regulations specify that groups cannot exceed three dogs. Access to Wildcat Canyon is granted only through the north end of the park from the staging area off Park Ave., and walkers can enjoy the Wildcat Creek Trail, which extends for two miles south from that point. It’s essential to keep a watchful eye on your pup, especially around horses, so if your dog isn’t comfortable or under strict voice control, it’s best to keep them leashed. As with any outdoor adventure, remember to clean up after your dog to maintain the park’s natural beauty for everyone. With its diverse trails and picturesque landscape, Wildcat Canyon Regional Park offers an enriching experience for both you and your canine companion.
